Wilkommen!

Wilkommen to our blog!  We hope that you find this a useful way to keep up with all of our goings-on while we are abroad, and we hope it’s entertaining, too!

The first thing we must do is explain the title of our site, “Two Tramps Abroad.”  We’re hoping that people remember that “tramp” has more than one meaning; in this case, a tramp is a person who travels on foot from place to place, and we’ve certainly been doing a lot of that.

The real reason for the name of the site, however, is the title of a Mark Twain book, A Tramp Abroad.  In A Tramp Abroad, Twain himself and a fictional friend journey through Europe as tramps with the goal of walking most of the way.  The book entails quite a humorous journey through Germany and the Alps.  We commiserate best with Twain when he says, “I can understand German as well as the maniac who invented it, but I talk it best through an interpreter.”

Please come back to the site often and leave comments and messages!  Also, view lots of our photos at Russ’s website: http://rlabarca.smugmug.com/

This weekend we travel to The Black Forest region to celebrate Lauren’s birthday.  We’ll be missing the family get-togethers and the fireworks, but we know we’re very lucky to be here!

I remember the July 4th of 1976 – Rick and I watched fireworks in Heidelburg with Nick and Andie Pesut – and the 200 birthday celebration of USA
